About me

I am a writer and photographer based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

My photographs have been exhibited across the United States, in venues including the Houston Center for Photography, Bonni Benrubi Gallery, Rayko Photo Center, and G. Ray Hawkins Gallery. In 2018, I was one of 100 photographers selected to participate in the Review Santa Fe Photo Festival. In my hometown of Boston, my work has been shown at venues including the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Bernard Toale Gallery, Barbara Krakow Gallery, Howard Yezerski Gallery, Dan Elias Fine Art, the St. Botolph Club, the Boston Photographic Resource Center, and the Massachusetts State House. I was one of approximately 80 young artists selected worldwide in 2001 for the Sotheby’s Artlink international emerging artist program, with simultaneous exhibitions in Austria, Israel and the United States, and my work has been included in exhibitions in Japan, Canada, and France.

Early in my career, I had the privilege of printing for renowned portrait photographer Arnold Newman; printing for and working with photojournalist and documentary photographer Eugene Richards; and assisting artists including William Wegman, Frank Gohlke, and Abelardo Morell. For six years, I was the studio manager for educator, photographer, and author Henry Horenstein.

As a writer on photography, I have been a major contributor to two textbooks on the medium: Photography, with Henry Horenstein and Russell Hart, a comprehensive curriculum published by Prentice-Hall; and Black-and-White Photography: A Basic Manual, the third edition of the best-selling classic with Henry Horenstein, published by Little-Brown. I was the founding editor and writer for TeachingPhoto.com (now a site overseen and edited by critic A. D. Coleman) and a contributor to American PHOTO On Campus magazine.

I’ve taught photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University, and UMass/Boston. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree in the Political and Social Thought Distinguished Major Program from the University of Virginia and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
